Day Trips

Glen Oakes is ideally situated for exploring the surrounding attractions  - the Overberg region which literally means “over the mountains” offers spectacular scenic destinations, seasonal delights and coastal activities.
THE OVERBERG  SURROUNDING AREAS

Apart from the beautiful beaches and nature reserves, you will find the heart of agriculture in the Western Cape. Dairy, fruit, grain, wine , wildflowers and cattle farming are all part and parcel of this majestic region that literally changes aesthetically from season to season offering the best of seasonal and artisanal fare to discerning travelers and day trippers..

The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley (Heaven and Earth) is now becoming one of the biggest and most fashionable wine producing areas in Southern Africa, was actually a leper colony from 1817 - 1846. The valley starts from the base of Hermanus, the Riviera of the South and also the destination where the magnificent Southern Right Whales return to from May  July to give birth. The Valley continues, winding along the Klein River Mountains, into the rolling wheat lands.

There are other places of interest with fascinating history in the Overberg. Genadendal, Greyton, Arniston (having some of the largest number of shipwrecks), are just a few to mention.

Superior vineyards and wine producers closest to Glen Oakes Farm would be Creation, Bouchard Finlayson, Hamilton-Russel, Sumaridge, Ataraxia, Spookfontein and Newton-Johnson. A little further away is Luddite in Botriver, Gabrielskloof close by & Raka close to Stanford among others.

Food is reason enough to explore the Overberg and very easy whilst based on the farm. Dassiesfontein, a farm stall close to Caledon on the N2, has the most delicious baked breads made from their own stone ground flour; you haven't lived until you've had a sundowner on the beach at Dutchies in Hermanus. There are so many superb places to stop at while exploring this whole region.
